Anyone who spends time with me quickly learns of my love of rescue dogs, big families, and heartwarming romance. Combine those three into a series of books set in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina and you can count me one very happy reader. After reading Sit...Stay...Beg, I'm all in with The Dogfather (patriarch Daniel Kilcannon) and his goal of seeing each of his children find the kind of love he shared with their mother, his recently deceased wife. Centered around the family's dog rescue and world class training facility, this story brings all the feels. I fell head over heels in love with this family. Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down and when I finished I wanted to start at the beginning and read it all over again. The canine characters are just as vital to the stories as the human ones with Lola, an Aussie-Border Collie mix rescue, and Garrett and Jessie (the hero and heroine of this book) all capturing my heart with their first joint appearance on the page. How people interact with dogs, especially depressed and unresponsive dogs, tells a lot about the type of people they are. Jessie and Garrett are good people, a great match, and worthy of their eventual happy ending. I cheered for them - and Lola - the entire way. If you enjoy a well-crafted, family-centric romance that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you smiling then I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Roxanne St. Claire's Sit...Stay...Beg. The Kilcannon's of Bitter Bark, North Carolina are known far and wide for their dog rescue farm called Waterford. Daniel, the father, known as "The Dogfather" is a local vet and his family of six children and his mother Gramma Finnie keep the rescue running. This first book in the series centers around Garrett. He started a pet web site, sold for millions and then dropped out of sight. A very bitter expose has turned him off to journalists and their lies. But there's one journalist who seems to be getting under his skin, and one of his depressed rescues will only respond to her.
Jessie (Jessica) Curtis grew up in Bitter Bark, and was best friends with Molly Kilcannon. One summer night playing a hide and seek game with the family she actually got a kiss from her heart throb Kilcannon, Garrett. Jessie was taken away from Bitter Bark as a teenager by her single mom and sister. She had a difficult childhood, and she felt safe and loved in Bitter Bark. She is now a journalist for a publishing company, and has an opportunity to grab on on-air job, "Anchoring a TV show was a life long dream." But she had to get a story about the Billionaire Bachelor that walked away from fame and fortune, and use her friendship to get her story.
She is welcomed when she gets to the farm, coming across Garrett, now a hard, gorgeous version of her teenage crush. He is trying to get a rescue, named Lola, to at least eat. He has been trying with no success for a while. As soon as the dog see's Jessie she perks up and even wags her tail. Garrett is thrilled when she even eats a bit from Jessie. But all enthusiasm and friendship is gone when he finds out her job. He refuses an interview and walks away.
Encouraged by family members, and Lola, he decides to try and work with her, and the old attraction heats up. Lola is thriving and won't leave Jessie's side. Garrett relaxes and maybe tells too much, but he now trusts Jessie. Unfortunately, her boss will do anything to get the story.
I really enjoyed reading this romantic novel, it has all my favorite pulls, a slow romantic build up, large family, small town and rescues dogs. Not to mention some definite heat. I'm very excited to read the next in the series New Leash on Life. Best of all Ms. St. Clair donates funds from the first month of release to a Dog Rescue site.

She must now convince Garrett Kilcannon to grant her an in depth interview to help her win a promotion to the anchor seat at her news agency. The Kilcannon family run the nationally renown Waterford Farm, where they train and rescue dogs. The relationship that builds between Jessie & Garrett is deliberate, engaging and ultimately wonderful. The Kilcannon family members are priceless additions to the storyline and provide depth, humor and understanding. Watching Jessie evolve from a career oriented, solitary female to a conpassionate, loving woman is rewarding. Watching Garrett transform from a stoic, withdrawn individual to a warm, understanding, although still sometimes tense, man is fulfilling. His morality and values are inspiring, even though they've caused him pain. He & Jessie both overcome their pain, by helping each other, listening to family wisdom, and the many dogs who provide unconditional love. Terrific book.
This was a very engaging story which is the start of a series. Loved the setting the characters and the rescue and training of dogs. I would like to read the rest of the series, but won't. I believe a well told story can stand without graphic sex scenes. This is my personal preference.
