This novel captures the essence of early 20th century life in New York. If you like Willa Cather, you will enjoy this vibrant story of Roger Gale, and his three daughters, as they navigate the massive changes taking place in the years before, during and after World War I.
A wonderful novel, the first to win the Pultizer Prize, about Roger Gale who promised his dying wife he'd keep his daughters together. As adults Deborah, Edith and Laura are so different. They're all vibrant, smart women, but have different natures and desires. It's a wonderful window into life in 19th century New York.
This was a difficult book to read initially but gained momentum towards the end. When I first started reading it I wasn't sure if I would end up liking it. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise and I found that I actually enjoyed it very much.
Winner of the first Pulitzer Prize in 1918, it was a very good read. The widower father of three adult daughters, Roger Gale has challenges with each one. At a time when motorized vehicles are replacing horses, Gale misses the conditions of the past, but also understands he must accept change. I think author Poole is a forgotten author, but my research indicated he had a very interesting life. I enjoyed this book, and would recommend giving it a try.
